Fake news...

Post by Carana » Wed Aug 23, 2017 1:04 pm

This propaganda machine aimed at creating havoc appears to be getting worse...

I find this research study fascinating:

Partisanship, Propaganda, and Disinformation: Online Media and the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election
August 16, 2017

https://cyber.harvard.edu/publications/ ... mediacloud

I'm curious as to whether a similar study on Brexit has been done or not.

I can also see parallels with the MSM / social media coverage of the Madeleine case, for example...

Something I'd temporarily forgotten about is that so-called news or information, whether via articles, photos and perhaps now even video can be posted on social media sites and be taken up by MSM outlets, of various flavours, without any fact-checking. That then legitimises social media to convey the message that it must be true as it appeared in MSM.

Again, that reminds me of the UK-PT media tabloid war in the Madeleine case.

And, another aspect is the consipracy theories, trolling and menacing behaviour that arise out of all that.

An example from Charlottesville:

Oddly enough, I was scrolling through a few threads on Twitter at the time. It has now been picked up by the BBC:

The Daily Mail doesn't appear to be beyond doctoring photos...

Here's one on the recent fostered child story:

Photos can often be false. Either photoshopped, or cropped from a different situation at another time, often involving different people.

Here's one of Trump in a suit and tie, supposedly saving a Harvey stranded victim in a life-boat.

I guess the bottom line, whatever one's position on any particular issue, is:

Not too difficult - even I got them right. :s_wink

Do post your scores, if you like, but try to avoid spoilers for those who'd like to try it for themselves.

Not really about fake news, but an interesting read, IMO, on deciphering who anonymous press sources may be. This only applies to the serious media, evidently.
